Wanna Jump Like Mike? It’s Not All Genetics
I’m sure that you, like the rest of us, are still in mourning for Michael Jordan’s retirement (from basketball…we’re all cheering that he retired baseball.) Michael Jordan was a crowd pleaser for his amazing speed and precision to be sure. However, we all know the real reason that this name has forever changed basketball: his vertical leap. You say “Michael Jordan” and this is definitely the image that comes to mind. However, now that he’s retired a fresh set of athletes must come in who can take his legacy and make it better. If you wanna jump like Mike, you will learn it’s not all genetics.
The vertical jump is essential to just about any sport. Whether basketball is your passion or volleyball or whatever else, increasing your vertical jump will make you a better athlete. Don’t despair if right now your vertical leap looks only a little better than a hop. There are methods of training so you can increase your vertical jump no matter what your current progress. Keep these workouts in mind and continue exercising to increase your vertical. It won’t happen all at once but you definitely can improve. Here are some starter workouts:
- Vertical jumps: No this isn’t a joke. Practicing your vertical jump will help improve your vertical jump. Yea for no brainers!
- Jump roping: The simple act of jumping will help your muscles get use to the work out of stretching and contracting your muscles. No one said you have to do this workout with little girls singing chants about Cinderella. Get your own rope and try to mix it up.
- Squats: These can be done with weights or not. If you’re a beginner, it’s safer to start without the weights. Have your coach or a trainer help you gradually add weight. In the beginning, the best method is repetition. Try to fit in as many as you can in a minute. This helps your legs get used to the motion you have when you jump and improves your quads.
- Calf raises: Put your feet on the edge of a stair and lift your legs using just your feet and ankles. Move till you’re standing on the balls of your feet and tighten your calf muscle. Keep your knees straight but not locked.
These exercises will begin to improve your vertical jump and will help you improve as an athlete. Be smart and don’t over do any of these. Taken with patience and precision you should be able to improve your vertical leap. We hope that you’ll be able to reach your goals. Who knows, maybe we be seeing you as the next Michael Jordan.
